Our nearshore assessment methods reflect specific client objectives, but often include a combination of topographic and coastal geomorphic mapping, historic shore change, littoral sediment source mapping, restoration/ conservation prioritization, and project feasibility assessment. Projects vary from Sound-wide to small shore reaches for a wide range of clients from landowners to resource managers.

CGS creates coastal restoration and enhancement project designs as a core service, with over 20 years experience. Many of these projects were initially identified by CGS during field mapping efforts and later assessed for feasibility, designed, implemented, and monitored by CGS. Our staff members possess complementary skill sets to achieve almost all aspects of nearshore restoration, and we also utilize a group of sub-consultants.

CGS has been monitoring our region's coast since the company’s inception in 1993. From river deltas, eroding bluffs, barrier beaches and coastal wetlands, we have experience documenting physical changes in beach topography, bathymetry, volume, inlet dynamics, sediment composition, vegetation assemblages, and nearshore habitats such as forage fish spawning areas. We have quantitatively monitored beach restoration, beach enhancement, and estuary restoration project performance for over 20 years.

CGS utilizes its diverse information and knowledge base in addition to our field experience along more than half of the Puget Sound shoreline as the basis for coastal ecosystem management. This knowledge enables staff to efficiently provide synthesis and management recommendations that aid in the development of Shoreline Master Program updates, erosion-habitat management plans, regional “white papers”, and sea level rise/climate change planning.
